Papua New Guinea Aim High
It
could be dubbed the most ambitious campaign in Rugby League’s history - Papua New Guinea
want to enter a team in the NRL competition!
PNG
officials have begun a concentrated campaign to have a team playing in the NRL
no later than 2014.
This
is a monumental boast but one that will meet with widespread approval from the
rank and file.
There
has never been a “weak” PNG team and this year’s World Cup is certain to verify
that appraisal.
PNG
is already looming as a possible semi-finalist, despite being drawn in the top
graded pool of Australia, New Zealand and England.
The
rate of improvement by PNG players is startling and exciting. Professional
coaching and a sound structure have bearing fruit.
PNG
officials will begin lobbying NRL hierarchy in Sydney next month when they attend the
International Rugby League Board meeting.
Chairman,
Albert Veratau believes the time has come for Papua New Guinea to be recognised
as a future NRL competitor.
Former
Newcastle Knights winger Arnold Kerwanty, who is chairman of PNG selectors,
believes a PNG club should cut its teeth by entering a team in the Queensland
Cup to prepare for the acceptance to the NRL.
NRL
spokesman John Brady said PNG’s plans were “encouraging.”
“If
they aim high, work hard and make a compelling case then it doesn’t mean it’s
out of the question,” said Brady.
“The
passion is there and everybody is aware how fanatical PNG is for Rugby League
and they are on our doorstep.”
Australian
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd recently gave PNG $250,000 for sport development,
particularly Rugby League.
The
news of PNG’s ambitious goal adds spice to their World Cup campaign. PNG will
be a major drawcard especially when they play the very first game of the 2008
World Cup.
PNG
meet England
at Dairy Farmer’s Stadium in Townsville on Saturday, 25 October.
Meanwhile
the Sydney Morning Herald’s League writers have named Willie Mason in their
“team of the week.”
This
follows Mason’s blockbusting display for the Roosters against his former club,
the Bulldogs last week.
Mason
was explosive and proved, to me, at least, there are few more dynamic “big
match” players.
I
have seen Mason when he has been little better than “average.”
But
against the Bulldogs he proved his worth as a match winner. I rated his
performance the best by any forward this season.
