    Player exodus after RLWC08

    Gday,

Just wondering if you guys are worried about a large amount of star NRL players leaving after this years World Cup?. With talk of Sonny BIll Williams wanting to have a go at union, and now this morning i've heard Mark Gasnier might be taking up an offer to play Union in France its got me thinking this might just be the beginning.  Lockyer was rumoured to be looking to go to England after the WC but has since totally denied that, saying he still has a year to run run on his contract and is very excited about playing under Ivan Henjak.

Still, RL in Australia has incredible depth, and it seems as though when one star player retires or goes overseas etc, another young player comes through and takes his place. But do you think a player exodus would be unsettling for our game?.

SBW would be a tragic loss, Gasnier, I never felt he was as good as pple made him out to be, it will mainly be for the money. Same with Lockyer the possible Wigan move will be to make a bit of cash at the end of his career.

but the SBW move is the most worrying. This is why we need to have much greaterdepth in countries playing tournaments... SBW i guarantee does not wnat to do it for the game but to get the chance to "see the world". Its a free junket for him basically and Union will no where near test him out physically so he will have a longer career with less injuries.

    Re: Player exodus after RLWC08

I heard someone make a good point about the SBW issue the other day which kinda proved any move to union would be purely for more cash. SBW said himself that it was his dream and every New Zealand boys dream to play for the All Blacks, fair enough, but why didnt he do that then instead of playing league?. He also said that if a 'big' offer comes along then he will look at it.

To me, thats not a kid realising his dream of playing for the All Blacks, its a bloke that maybe after a bit of a change, and a lot more money.

    Re: Player exodus after RLWC08

Look everyone knows that SBW is injury prone, the kid probably wants to get out and play some footy with out that risk... union will provide that for him, paerticularly since he'll be in the backline... I mean he's not fat enough for the RU forwards... and a big pay check that is grossly overvalued for what he does will follow as well.

The question is, in NZ is there any room for him. Why not help get IRL to a decent level?

    Re: Player exodus after RLWC08

NZRU would have players with the talent of SBW lined up for a back line position, I dont see why they would even need to chase him. It'd be different if it was the ARU, they dont seem to have much depth in many positions at the moment compared with the other major world powers.

I really hope he does stay in RL, purely for the NZRL's sake. The NZRL is coming along strong again after a couple of disappointing years after their 24-0 win over Australia in the Tri series final but they need their quality players to hang around, so they can form some good combinations, and get some consistency.

Mate, if the Wallabies paid mega dollars for a New Zealand born New Zealand Rugby League representative, then I think that would really be admitting defeat. People can cop them stealing Australian RL players, but I dont think it would go done well getting a kiwi in the team

Is Dave Nucifora an Argie??, he's my second cousin, ive always known him to have been a brisbane boy. Perhaps of Argentinian descent.

The reason they would want S.B.W  is for the publicity he would bring to the sport. He is worth megabucks in profile and would do wonders for their image.

Like i have said before about players going to union, they become lost in the ether:: take for example tah-who, what has happened to him, you probably wont see him until the world cup comes around, league just seems to lose a player then creates another mega-star. This is why we dont worry about losing players to super-league or union.

G'day Druzik, I think you are thinking of Rodriguez who played prop for the Wallabies for a few years after several years with the Pumas. Nucifora is definitely from Brisbane.

From all the media coverage of SBW he sounds a little confused about his future direction at this time. I think he needs a good mentor to sit down with him to show him the way forward. Hopefully it will be someone from the RL world.

    Re: Player exodus after RLWC08

Thats what i have said before rowly, glad you brought it up again, i think Sonny Bill Williams needs to have someone sit down with him and explain the future of rugby league,(take him by the hand)

the international game is starting to take shape, these guys who are treading off to union should have the plan explained to them. Mark Gasnier is another one who seems out of sorts with his future, weather its the money they are chasing or some other reason, we are not quite sure , but i do know that money talks.

It has been mentioned in a rugby league post that France is still threatening guys who join league to boycott their bussiness. We have a long way to go to cut this sort of crap out of our game. Maybe having a league talent like gasnier go and play union might speed the process up a bit over there, for every gasnier we lose, their are 5 juniors waiting to come through.

Like i have mentioned earlier, once we get the melbourne and west aussies back in the comp, the talent pool have increased by nearly a third in the next 10 years, by then our world cup will be in a better position to grow the game. The 10 year plan mapped out by the r.l.i.f  would have this in mind, and by then i think the bidding for a world cup would start to take shape, France and America would be likely bidders. England and Australia would also love to have the game but we have to start expanding.

I have mentioned just have the world cup in oz every 4 years, but i was being greedy. You would easily be able to do this by having the games played in every state.

Just reading up ion him... OK maybe not him but there was an ex- argie running around for Australia at some point in the early 90's. Anyone?

OK cheers for clearing that up mate. I knew there was an argie in there at some point.
